Downcore relative abundance of the polar planktonic foraminifer Neogloboquadrina pachyderma (sinistral) indicates frequent southward penetration of polar/subpolar surface waters to the position of Site U1304. The concentration of diatoms and the relative abundance of the planktonic foraminifer Globorotalia inflata suggest the recurring presence of hydrographic fronts. The benthic foraminifer Epistominella exigua may indicate fresh organic matter sedimentation at the seafloor.
