Figure F11. Series of SEM photomicrographs of pyritized foraminifers from Sample 331-C0014A-1H-4, 130–132 cm (4.1 mbsl). A–C. Proximal and distal views of Neogloboquadrina eggeri and Orbulina universa demonstrate the high degree of preservation of these “fossilized” microfossils. D. A cracked Orbulina universa microfossil demonstrates that these pyritized foraminifers are hollow. At higher magnification (area of box in D), the pyrite was observed to be (E) generally framboidal in nature and (F) ordered at high magnification (backscattered SEM), although not, as yet, crystallized into well-ordered framboidal pyrite.
