Separation of eigenvalues is related to the shape and degree of magnetic fabric (see “Paleomagnetism” in the “Methods” chapter [Norris et al., 2014b]). For example, if τ1 and τ2 are close or indistinguishable but distinct from τ3, then the bulk fabric is oblate. V3 = minimum eigenvector, P = degree of anisotropy (τ13).
