Separation of eigenvalues is related to the shape and degree of magnetic fabric (see “Paleomagnetism” in the “Methods” chapter [Norris et al., 2014b]). For example, if τ1 and τ2 are close or indistinguishable but distinct from τ3, then the bulk fabric is oblate. Bulk density and porosity are described in “Physical properties” and lithostratigraphic units in “Lithostratigraphy.” Eigenvalues: τ1 = maximum, τ2 = intermediate, τ3 = minimum. V3 = minimum eigenvector, P = degree of anisotropy (τ1/ τ3). APC = advanced piston corer, XCB = extended core barrel.
