Separation of eigenvalues is related to the shape and degree of the magnetic fabric (see “Paleomagnetism” in the “Methods” chapter [Norris et al., 2014a]). For example, if τ1 and τ2 are close or indistinguishable but distinct from τ3, then the bulk fabric is oblate. Lithostratigraphic units are described in “Lithostratigraphy.” Eigenvalues: τ1 = maximum, τ2 = intermediate, τ3 = minimum. V3 = minimum eigenvector, P = degree of anisotropy (τ1/ τ3).
