Figure F5. Total and tectonic subsidence curves for the Clipper exploration well (Fig. F2), with and without paleowater depth estimates. The curve with paleowater depths shows that most tectonic subsidence occurred during the early Late Cretaceous, with mild uplift during the latest Cretaceous. Little tectonic subsidence has occurred during the last 30 m.y. The increase in the rate of tectonic subsidence beginning at ~8 Ma may be a response to increasing convergence at the Alpine Fault (curves provided by G. Browne, R. Wood, and R. Funnell, New Zealand Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences).
