Objectives: • To determine the nature and age of the northeasternmost South China Sea basin
• To determine if the northeasternmost South China Sea basin is affiliated with Mesozoic paleo-Pacific or Tethys oceanic crust, an attenuated continental block, or a continent-ocean transition zone
• To test if oceanic crust as old as 37 Ma exists in the northeasternmost South China Sea basin
• To examine the nature of crust subducting beneath the Luzon arc
Drilling program: Hole A:
• APC to refusal with nonmagnetic core barrels, core orientation (FlexIT tool), and APCT-3
• XCB to refusal
• Drop FFF
• RCB with nonmagnetic core barrels to 1210 mbsf
Downhole logging program: • Triple combo
• FMS-sonic
Nature of rock anticipated: (Calcareous) mudstone, siltstone, sandstone, basalt
